Methodology

Our decarbonisation approach lays forth a plan for achieving and exceeding carbon emissions reduction goals. Whatever stage of your decarbonisation journey you are on, it is critical to use a disciplined approach to map out how your objectives will be met, and a successful outcome attained.

Before developing decarbonisation aims and targets, operators must first understand their carbon baseline by benchmarking, analyse the primary emission sources, taking policy and company strategy into account. They must next examine and map out strategies in order to build decarbonisation route possibilities. We have broken down this process into five basic steps; Audit, Baseline, Identify Primary Sources, Improvements, and Results. Where our process can be repeated over and over, until the desired results are obtained.

Audit

Before any action plans can be implemented, it is essential to have a clear picture of the possible emission sources and their respective contributions to the overall carbon footprint. This is essential for building a firm foundation to start working on cutting down emissions. We have developed a simple and effective carbon calculator that lists the most common sources and their corresponding emissions calibrated according to the UK government standards. This tool can be utilised by any organisation to audit their overall carbon footprint.

Baseline

Once the audit is performed using the carbon calculator, a baseline for the emissions can be generated which can be split into various sectors according to the nature of emissions and the associated activities. It enables us to identify the cause-effect relationship of each aspect of the organisation and the corresponding emissions.

Identify primary sources

With the baseline for individual operations charted out the major factors contributing to these can be singled out and investigated individually. Each major factor can be further divided into subcategories to simplify the process.

Improvements

Now the identified sources need to be examined and the possibility of reducing each of these should be discussed, an easy strategy to go by would be:

Result

Now with the practical improvement strategies identified, a new audit can be performed to analyse the effectiveness of any improvements made. This process can be repeated to make the organisation more efficient. Also, periodic checks are recommended for effective reductions of emissions in the long term for achieving net-zero.
